Message from North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme:
In Memory: North Miami Hosts Kristallnacht Commemoration Event
NORTH MIAMI, FL (November 8, 2023) The City of North Miami is hosting a special Kristallnacht Commemoration event on Thursday, November 9, 2023, from 6 – 8 p.m., at the Beth Moshe Congregation, 2225 NE 121 Street, North Miami, FL 33181. This event will honor the memory of the victims of Kristallnacht and serve as a testament to our commitment to promoting tolerance, understanding, and peace in our community.
Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of Broken Glass, marked a dark chapter in history, a night of violence, destruction, and hatred against the Jewish community. It marked a significant turning point in the persecution of Jews leading up to the Holocaust. The name “Kristallnacht” refers to the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after Jewish-owned businesses, synagogues, and homes were vandalized and destroyed. This commemoration event is our way of remembering the past to ensure such atrocities are never repeated.
North Miami Mayor Dr. Alix Desulme invites media members to join us in remembering Kristallnacht and renewing our commitment to a world free from hate, discrimination, and prejudice. Distinguished speakers include Holocaust Survivor Laszlo Selly, Leslie Gelrubin Benitah, Founder of The Last Ones, and Deputy Israel Consul General Mike Driquez, and many more, all of whom are united in unwavering solidarity during an unprecedented rise in global antisemitism.
“The City of North Miami is steadfast in our support to foster a more inclusive and compassionate society,” said Mayor Desulme. “Our great city is symbolic of the great melting pot that this country was founded on, and now more than ever, we must join together to condemn all acts of hate.”
We look forward to you coming to this meaningful event as more than 200 have pre-registered to attend in hopes of honoring the memory of the past and working towards a more tolerant future.
