Press Release: Broward County Commission set to replicate version of City of Hallandale Beach “CONDOMINIUM, HOA & CO-OP TRANSPARENCY ACT”

BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSION SET TO REPLICATE VERSION OF CITY OF HALLANDALE BEACH “CONDOMINIUM, HOA & CO-OP TRANSPARENCY ACT”

Hallandale Beach, FL, June 14, 2022 – During today’s 10 AM meeting, the Broward County Commission is set to adopt an Ordinance pertaining to community associations and transparency. The blueprint of this Ordinance is modeled from the City of Hallandale Beach. Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub sponsored the Condominium, HOA and Co-Op Transparency Act in 2020 with additional rules and regulations currently being proposed by the Broward County Commission.

In 2020, Hallandale Beach became the first Florida city to pass an ordinance requiring that condo associations file financial reports and governing documents to the local government. “Approximately 60% of Hallandale Beach condo associations are in compliance with Hallandale’s Condo, HOA & Co-Op Transparency Ordinance. The deadline to follow the law is February 1. The way that this came about was after hundreds of complaints and a need to attenuate often legitimate complaints by condo owners, many on a fixed income,” said Commissioner Lima-Taub.

Many Broward County residents have complained to me and former State Representative Julio Robaina about not having access to documents, fraud and waste, as well as concerns regarding inspection and building violations. I am pleased the Broward County Commission is considering Hallandale’s blueprint in helping Broward residents gain access to documents that may be withheld by some association board members,” said the sponsor of the Ordinance, Commissioner Lima-Taub.

Former Florida State Representative said, “Even though there are laws about what records need to be turned over to the public, records don’t actually get turned over to condo owners. I hope the model of the Condo, HOA & Co-Op Transparency Act I worked on together with Commissioner Lima-Taub for over three years will be adopted in Broward County.”
