As predicted, North Miami city officials are quickly going into damage control mode, desperately trying to put the genie back in the bottle after yesterday’s bombshell story about the police department.

Can’t really blame them.  They don’t pay media crisis consultant Brian Andrews of The News Directors, Inc. a whopping $2,000.00 a month for nothing.

Last night, NBC6 aired a follow up story about Police Chief Gary Eugene’s explosive interview with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in the aftermath of a notorious police shooting last summer.  In his own words, the Chief described the myriad of problems he had inherited from his incompetent predecessor, Leonard Burgess, when he took the helm only a month earlier.

As expected, the officers he “outed” for conspiring against him … and against the truth … are livid.  “Illuminati” leader, Assistant Chief Larry Juriga, who the Chief accused of lying repeatedly to him about the facts of the shooting, and his “co-conspirator,” Commander Angel Rivera, who allegedly  attempted to coerce Commander Emile Hollant into revising his testimony, are among the cops who should be worried.  It now appears that they deliberately botched the investigation in order to protect the shooter, Jonathan Aledda, a member of the SWAT team under Rivera’s command.

A Miami Herald article posted last night described a disagreement between Chief Eugene and City Manager Larry Spring, who “couldn’t understand how Hollant could transmit over the radio that it appeared Rios, the autistic man, was loading a weapon but not witness the incident.”  Eugene defended Hollant by explaining that he “had plenty of time to return to the scene in the four minutes between his transmission and his alleged walk back to his patrol vehicle to grab binoculars.”

Despite pressure from Rivera, Commander Emile Hollant, who was present on the scene but did not personally witness the actual shooting, has stood by his statement that this is exactly what happened.

The testimony that Chief Gary Eugene gave to the FDLE is consistent with the information he had been providing to the authorities from day one.  At the time, the Chief was fuming that he had been lied to by his Assistant Chief, and was ready to fire him on the spot, but Deputy City Manager Arthur Sorey intervened on Juriga’s behalf.

Now city officials are more outraged that the State Attorney’s Office released the taped interview of Chief Eugene without prior notice than they seem to be about the confirmed corruption in the police department.

In the latest article posted this morning by the Miami New Times, North Miami Commissioner: Rundle Should “Wrap Up” Kinsey Investigation Already,  Councilman Scott Galvin was quoted as saying, “The State Attorney’s Office, without notifying the City of North Miami, released critical documentation into an ongoing and open investigation. We’re not even clear yet what else… hasn’t been released.”

The New Times also reiterated the fact  that Commander Hollant, who was set up by Assistant Chief Larry Juriga, was cleared of all wrongdoing  by the State Attorney’s Office within two days of the complaint improperly filed against him.

And, yet, by asking, “Is Hollant’s testimony available?”, Councilman Galvin is still  intent on dragging the Commander into the mix.

Why?

While the investigation of the shooter, Officer Jonathan Aledda has not yet been completed, there is NO “ongoing and open investigation” being conducted on Commander Emile Hollant. 

That ship has sailed!

The only “open investigation” that is currently being conducted on Commander Hollant is by the PD’s own Internal Affairs division.  Considering that Hollant “violated” the blue wall of silence by refusing to lie to protect another cop, I’m sure the investigation will be completely fair and impartial.

NOT!

Whether he is doing it deliberately or unwittingly, Mr. Galvin’s attempt to skirt the real issue is not fooling anyone, and is an insult to the intelligence of North Miami residents.

Councilman Galvin also seems intent on discrediting the Police Chief.  Despite the fact that Gary Eugene has been employed by the North Miami Police Department since 2013, as pointed out by the New Times, Galvin stated, “It’s hard to grasp the entirety of the police department in just two weeks’ time in there …”

No, Mr. Galvin, it’s not hard at all.

Considering that, under Eugene’s predecessor, the NMPD failed its accreditation assessment for the first time in its history, it is proof positive that the “entirety of the police department” is one hot mess.

Just saying.

All this deflecting, finger-pointing, and red-herring tossing will do nothing to change the fact that North Miami Police Chief Gary Eugene’s statement to the FDLE was the truth as he saw it.  He is to be commended for his honesty and for having the courage to stand by his words.

Instead, he is being attacked by city officials for daring to speak his mind.

Meanwhile, the three most critical issues that no one at City Hall seems to be concerned about are that (a) Assistant Chief Larry Juriga repeatedly lied to his direct supervisor about a police shooting, (b) Commander Angel Rivera attempted to tamper with the testimony of a witness, and (c) both of them defied the Chief’s direct order not to file false charges against Commander Hollant with the State Attorney’s Office.

If they are capable of going to such great lengths in order to cover the ass of a fellow cop, how far would they go to cover their own?

Better yet, how far have they already gone?
