The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports, one out of every four women die because of heart-disease related illnesses. In fact every year, more women die from heart disease than any other female-related cancers combined.
In an effort to bring awareness of heart disease, the City of North Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women, Councilwoman Beth E. Spiegel, liaison, will host the City’s first-ever “Heart Health Walk” on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Gwen Margolis Amphitheater, 16501 NE 16th Avenue right here in the heart of North Miami Beach. “Heart Health Walk” will last from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and the actual walk will commence at 9 a.m. This walk is a free, family-friendly event open to all age groups. The 2.6 mile walk will follow the paved trails along the banks of Snake Creek Canal. Participants will begin and end at Gwen Margolis Amphitheater.
Amphitheater gates will open promptly at 8 a.m. for walkers to register and allow attendees time to visit a variety of booths and tables hosting local health care professionals who will be on hand to provide free health screenings throughout the event. Also, fitness trainers will provide free group exercise routines for attendees. The event will include music and entertainment, raffles and prizes, and much more!
According to Councilwoman Spiegel, developing awareness of heart disease is something she truly supports. She hopes this annual event can be pivotal to create lasting change in the lives of women in our community.
The Commission on the Status of Women will unveil the new mile marker posts that have been placed along the canal to encourage the community to get up, get moving, and stay active!
